PAINTING BLACKFRIARS

WHAT IS “PAINTING BLACKFRIARS”?

It is, first and foremost, a celebration of community.

The event will take place throughout the day on Saturday, September 20th. The centerpiece activity will be “plein air” painting at various locations around Blackfriars by over 35 members of the Gallery Painting Group. The Gallery Painting Group is the oldest painting society in London and its main activity is working outdoors in and around the city. Each member of the group will begin the day with a blank canvas or paper with the objective of completing the work by the end of the afternoon. The subject matter for the painters will be the homes, trees, streets and gardens of Blackfriars. While the artists work, people coming to the event will be able to watch how a painting is created. At the end of the day, all the work will be brought together in a showing of the completed works. Other art works about Blackfriars which the artists have been creating through the summer will also be on display.

WHAT ELSE WILL BE HAPPENING ON SEPTEMBER 20th?

In addition to the outdoor sketching activity, other events will occur all day to showcase other creative and historic aspects of this community. A map with drawings of local houses and other landmarks as well as stories and information about Blackfriars will be available. Visitors will be encouraged to use the map to take a walk through the community, see the artists at work and to discover the hidden treasures of this very old neighbourhood. There will be a music stage at the community garden with performers from Blackfriars. A children’s activity area, where kids can create their own impressions of the neighbourhood, will be set up. A central Welcome Tent will give information about other surprises awaiting visitors to the neighbourhood.

WHAT DOES IT COST AND WHO CAN COME?

The event is free to everyone. We are proud of our historic community and want to show it off to the rest of London.

INTERESTED?

This year, the residents of London will have the opportunity to kick off their festive spirit while supporting this important cause.

Taking place in beautiful Springbank Park, there are options for all runners (and walkers!) with a 2K, 5K or 10K option

Santa will be present to keep our runners hydrated and festive costumes are encouraged! Lockers and washrooms will be available on site and pets are welcome. Please bring along a non-perishable food item and receive a draw ticket to win a fabulous prize.
