Owl Prowl

The Owl Prowl held east of Exeter each November draws hundreds of people to Morrison Dam Conservation Area. Last year, for the first time, the Bluewater Centre for Raptor Rehabilitation brought live owls to the educational nature event. The live owls were so popular event organizers say the owls are coming back for this year’s activity.
“The live owls last year added something new and exciting to an event that people already loved,” said Julie Stellingwerff, Conservation Educator and Team Leader with Ausable Bayfield Conservation. “Hundreds of people attend this event to call for owls, learn about owls, and find out how they thrive in the night.”
Last year was also the first time the Owl Prowl gave the public the choice of three starting times. “That worked really well for those who took part,” said Stellingwerff. “It worked so well last year we’re doing it again this year.”
The public can choose from one of three owl presentation and hike sessions starting at 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m., or 8:30 p.m. Space is limited. Organizers invite participants to come early for the time they prefer and invite families with younger children to consider the earlier time.
Ausable Bayfield Conservation hosts the Owl Prowl at Morrison Dam Conservation Area Workshop, 71108 Morrison Line, two kilometres east of Exeter, just south of Highway 83. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, November 1, 2014 with three live owl presentation and hike sessions.
What is the Owl Prowl? It is billed as a night of fun and learning about nature. Conservation educators present facts about owls and how these amazing birds adapt to the night. People who take part get to join in a moonlit, guided night-hike owl ‘hoot.’ They also enjoy an interactive, multimedia presentation. Some people have seen and heard Eastern Screech Owls during this unique chance to learn about these special birds. The event is free. Staff members do welcome any donations to conservation education.

Organizers say to please dress for the weather and to leave your pets at home.
For more information, visit abca.on.ca and type in ‘Owl Prowl’ in the search box at the top of the home page and press ‘Search.’ This will take you to the Owl Prowl page at: http://www.abca.on.ca/page.php?page=owl-prowl
You may also call 519-235-2610 or toll-free 1-888-286-2610 or email info@abca.on.ca. You may also contact Ausable Bayfield Conservation through the contact form or staff contacts page.

ROBIN WILLIAMS DOUBLE BILL

This November 2nd, The “ROBIN WILLIAMS DOUBLE BILL” begins at 6:30 pm, with opening remarks from representatives of CMHA Middlesex and Movember, followed by two films starring the late Robin Williams, “Dead Poet’s Society” and “Good Will Hunting.” Intermission will feature a short local documentary called “Behind the Curtain: How We Survive,” which was co-written by Londoners Nancy Hiron and Julie Varley (www.howwesurvive.ca). This film chronicles the shared experiences of Hiron and Varley, both of whom are mothers who have lost adult children to suicide. The cost to attend this event is by pay-what-you-can-donation at the door, with the proceeds to be equally distributed between Movember and CMHA Middlesex. “Often men do not talk about their struggles with their mental health. We’re excited to be working with Movember to honour the work of Robin Williams whose death by suicide highlighted the need to have this conversation as a community,” states Don Seymour, CMHA Middlesex CEO. Cari Ramsey, of Movember London adds “Movember London encourages MoBros and MoSistas in the community to unite, to support one another and to work together towards changing the face of men’s health and erasing the stigma associated with mental illness.” What: Robin Williams Double Bill When: Sunday November 2, 2014, beginning at 6:30 pm Where: The Palace Theatre – 710 Dundas Street, London Cost: Pay-what-you-can donation For additional information contact: Cari Ramsey, Movember London 519-520-2675 Kristy Cairns, Canadian Mental Health Association, Middlesex 519-668-0624, x425 Faith Coates, Palace Theatre 519-432-1029

3rd Annual Windows of Opportunity

Enjoy a cocktail reception and auction of our most unique items, and meet 80’s Hit-Maker Gordon Deppe of The Spoons as he performs this evening. Delicious hors d’oeuvres created from a seasonal, locally produced menu at the Delta London Armouries round out the event. Tickets are $50.00 per person.

Windows of Opportunity now in its third year, engages artists, business owners and other members of the community, and challenges them to take an item like a door or window from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and turn it into a piece of art or furniture for the home, office or garden. All refurbished pieces are displayed and auctioned off in support of Habitat for Humanity’s build program. ReStores fund all administrative costs of Habitat and are building and household supply stores run by Habitat for Humanity affiliates that accept donations for resale of new and gently used home improvement and renovation materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. If you are interested in participating in the upcoming Windows of Opportunity event as a sponsor, artist or to buy tickets please contact Allison Kampman at akampman@habitat4home.ca or 519-455-6623 ext 229
