Art with Heart

Join us for 2 weeks of Art with Heart!

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is pleased to announce two great weeks of local art! The week starts off at the Westland Gallery with a group exhibition by local and area artists on theme of matters of the Heart. During this time please there will also be a special afternoon hosted by Chartwell Royalcliffe Retirement Residence featuring an Art Fair and Silent Auction.
The two weeks comes to a close on Valentine’s Day with a final reception at the Westland Gallery.

Proceeds from both events go to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. After a successful Art with Heart event last year, this year’s event promises to be an even bigger celebration of local arts and February Heart Month, which is the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s annual month of awareness.

The Art with Heart art fair and silent auction fundraiser will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2015 from 1:30pm-4pm at the Chartwell Royalcliffe Retirement Residence. The residence is located at 609 Wharncliffe Road South. Ticket are $5 and available at the door or in advance at the Heart and Stroke office located at 633 Colborne St Suite 180. The fair will feature art from emerging and established local artists of all ages. The event is an amazing opportunity to acquire some local art through these vendors and from this event’s silent auction. Light refreshments will be served. This event provides the community with a chance to enjoy local art while supporting a great cause.

Keeping up with the Art with heart spirit, the Westland Gallery has joined the team to host an Art from the Heart exhibition being held from January 27th to February 14th, 2015. The Westland Gallery is located at 156 Wortley Road. The Gallery is having a group exhibition by local and area artists on theme of matters of the Heart. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each work will go to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The closing reception is on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 4-7pm.

For more details on any of these events, please contact Denise Love at the Heart and Stroke Foundation at 519-679-0641. We look forward to seeing you at both the Chartwell Royalcliffe Retirement Residence Art Fair and Silent Auction and hope you can check out the Westland Gallery group exhibition.

London and Toronto go head-to-head in a full contact roller derby double header

On Saturday, February 7th London’s own Forest City Derby Girls (FCDG) will be taking on the GTA Rollergirls in a full contact, roller derby double header at the Western Fair Agriplex.

First up is The FCDG Timber Rollers who will be taking on the GTA Rollergirls G-sTARs. The Timber Rollers won the last game against the G-sTARS by only 9 points, so this game should be a nail biter all the way through. The Timber Rollers are currently ranked at 153 with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, while G-sTARS are sitting at 193.

In the second game, FCDG’s B-Line Activate will have a bout against Barrie’s South Simcoe Rebel Rollers. This will be the first time these two teams have competed on the track against each other.

As always FDCG games are family friendly and licensed events with hula hoops for all during half-time

Timber Roller jammer, Jewel C Starz is excited for the rematch with the G-sTARs. “We had a couple of skate mishaps the last time we played the GTA Rollergirls. One of my skates broke right before the game started and we barely got it fixed in time for me to play the game. Another jammer from our team, Torque, was working with borrowed skates because hers were also broken. I’m excited to go against this team again and win by an even larger margin.”

About the Forest City Derby Girls
The Forest City Derby Girls formed in 2006 to bring the sport of flat track roller derby to the London community. In the ensuing nine years, the league’s games are known for drawing large crowds.

Tickets:
Children 10 & under are free
$12 pregame tickets available from FCDG skaters
$15 at the door

15th Annual International Women’s Day Breakfast

The International Women's Day Breakfast is an annual fundraiser that takes place in support of the London Abused Women's Centre. Each year, the community gathers to bid on Silent and Live Auction items and other fundraising activities with the proceeds going directly to front-line services to support abused women in London. All of the items featured in the auctions and activities are generously donated by businesses in London and the surrounding area.

We welcome a keynote speaker each year to share their experiences while focusing on a particular topic that affects women. In our special 15th year we welcome Jasmine, a national advocate and public educator with Sextrade 101, a Toronto-based sex trade survivors organization. She frequently speaks at awareness events and training workshops on prostitution and human trafficking in Canada.

The morning is a great opportunity to connect with fellow community members, raise money for an essential cause and vital services for women, and hear inspired words from our guest speaker. We look forward to seeing you at the London Convention Centre on March 5th, 2015.

If you would like further information about the organization, please visit the website: www.lawc.on.ca

Huron Country Playhouse: Footloose

One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the Grand Bend stage with exhilarating results.

A young rebel moves to a small middle-American town where dance is forbidden, and encourages all young people to defy the strict edict of the local pastor and call for a rock ‘n’ roll party.  In so doing, he brings healing to the heart of a town held back by the memory of tragedy.

Anchored by memorable 80s anthems “Holding Out For A Hero”, “Almost Paradise”, “Let’s Hear It For The Boy”, and the self-titled track, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with warm hearts and open minds.
